The TivaWater Impact

  • Relief from diseases like typhoid and cholera that cause so much suffering, illness and death.
  • Saves very limited, precious financial resources that are use for medical care and drugs to treat these waterborne illness. Most of our families live on less than $5 per day, so the savings on medical treatment is significant.
  • Decreases spending on charcoal to boil water. In fact, 20% of household income is used for purchasing coal to purify drinking water, but a TivaWater filter frees up funds for other needed expenses, day after day.
  • Long-term, sustainable drinking water solution that lasts for years. Tons of charcoal is burned every day for drinking water in countries around the world creating tremendous amounts of air pollution and respiratory illness. A TivaWater filter replaces the need for burning charcoal and prevents the deforestation of thousands of acres of land.

The Difference:
Filtering Water in the Home

In order to provide the safest water, The World Health Organization teaches that water should be filtered and safely stored in the home where it is used every day.

Why? Because r
e-contamination occurs during the daily cycle of fetching from a water source (well or pond) and then storing the water before it is used. For example, most families share a common drinking cup that is dipped with unclean hands into the storage vessel and spoils the water.  It is proven that this leads to the infection of millions with deadly waterborne diseases.

With our approach, the TivaWater filter cleans and stores the water in one process. The purified water is protected from bacteria until someone is ready to drink from the tap.
 It's safe, simple and effective!

How TivaWater works:

Our filter is designed to clean any water, whether from a tap at home or a pond in the village. It eliminates bacteria to prevent intestinal diseases like parasites, worms, diarrhea, typhoid and cholera.

Using slow sand filter technology, TivaWater makes dirty, contaminated water clean and safe to drink right in the home:
  1. First, water passes through an easy-to-clean synthetic filter to sift out the dirt and sediment to prevent filter clogging.
  2. Next, as the water flows through the fine sand, the bacteria are much too large to squeeze through the granules. The germs quickly become trapped and die while the much smaller water molecules easily flow down the filter.
  3. After a couple weeks, a biological layer will form on the top of the sand and another within the sand bed. The top layer is called the schmutzdecke which means “dirty layer”. The schmutzdecke acts as a mechanical filter and removes smaller particles suspended in the water. It also acts as a biological filter and begins to decompose harmful organic material in the water. Within the sand, the second biological layer will continue the work of the schmutzdecke and yield clean, clear, great tasting water.
  4. The purified water is now safely stored and ready to drink. Each filter can clean enough water for 10 people per day.
